Cantilever: from shelving to parking
The term cantilever mainly identifies those types of metal shelving used for storing heavy industrial or construction materials.
This shelving system is ideal for optimizing space inside warehouses or sheds and is also often used in garages to house the greatest possible number of cars without creating clutter.
Cantilever meaning

What does cantilever mean? The English word identifies a type of cantilever beam, or a protuberance with support only at one of the two ends.
The term is also used, in fact, to define the design chair by the famous Dutch architect Mart Stam, typical of the 20th century, characterized by the almost suspended seat; it is precisely called a cantilever chair.
In the engineering field, we often talk about cantilever bridges, meaning those structures, used to connect strips of land separated by waterways, based on cantilever beams, also called Gerber beams, from the name of the German engineer Heinrich Gottfried Gerber, the first to design this type of bridge at the end of 1800.
What is cantilever shelving and how is it made
As previously mentioned, cantilever shelving is a storage system that allows you to store long, bulky and heavy material in an orderly manner without wasting space. Composed of shelves and columns, it is mainly used in the industrial sector to stack and store materials that weigh several tons:
- sheet metal;
- pipes;
- beams;
- tables;
- profiles;
- building materials or industrial support materials.
Cantilever parking: the space-saving car doubler

In English, “cantilever parking” refers to all those mechanical or automatic parking systems composed of a support column and a movable platform that allow you to double the space for cars or automobiles. Precisely because of their function, in Italian they are also called parking doublers or car doublers.
Svecom Parking Solutions creates safe and resistant car doublers that include the installation of support systems on the customer’s structure, or are sold with self-supporting elevators supplied.
Types of parking doublers
Parking doublers can be of three types:
- car doublers with pit (independent);
- car cantilever (independent);
- car garage doublers (dependent).
The first model is perfect for private homes with limited parking spaces, but which need space for multiple cars without having to move the previously parked vehicles each time.
The second model is an industrial system that allows you to stack cars on top of each other. Each of them can be removed without having to move the others.
The third option is ideal for workshops and garages that need to store cars without taking up space. These are dependent systems, that is, to remove a car, it is first necessary to free up the floor occupied by another car on the lower level.
